Adventures of commuting
CalTrain got me to Mountain View today which is not my final destination, but that’s where the train was when all track signals died. System-wide CalTrain failure.
Thankfully there is also a light rail in the area. A slow light rail. It looks similar to Seattle:s Link trains, but is part of the VTA (Valley Transport Authority?).
In my 14 months of working in the Bay Area, I’ve taken 5 train systems: BART, MUNI, CalTrain, Amtrak, VTA.
Remains after the fire
Last week San Francisco had a pretty big fire, but only a large unfinished apartment building was destroyed. These are the charred remains.

TSA Artwork
The TSA agent who checks your ID and flight info before you go through the scanners had a bit of extra time with me, since the lines were backed up. So, she decided to draw a picture of Golden Gate bridge for me.
Amtrak beats other Bay Area trains
I’ve now ridden BART, MUNI, CalTrain and Amtrak around the Bay Area. Amtrak is by far the nicest, plus it has free WiFi and power outlets. I certainly like the fact that there are so many train options in the area though!
It also costs over twice as much as CalTrain, but today I go from San Jose to Berkeley so it is the most direct option. Plus, it still beats driving and sitting in traffic.
